Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
