The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
