British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
